About Us

Welcome to New Light, a charity which celebrates and promotes the North of England's rich artistic heritage and the quality of art being produced in the region today.

We offer many exciting opportunities to Northern artists with our main event being a biennial, high profile, touring Prize Exhibition held in some of the region’s stunning spaces. This year, we are delighted to be working alongside The Bowes Museum in County Durham.

From the entries we receive, a panel of independent judges select the work to be exhibited. From this shortlist of chosen work several prizes are awarded: The Valeria Sykes Prize – a £10,000 award; a £2,500 Patron’s Choice Award; and the Swinton Foundation Prize to support an emerging artist including a mentoring scheme to help them develop the non-artistic side of working as a professional artist.

Other Prizes include a Printmakers' Prize and the Visitors' Choice Award.

We are also actively exploring other ways of supporting all of the shortlisted artists. This may include specific private views for gallery owners; tours of the exhibition to other galleries throughout the country and introductions to influential people in the art world. New and exciting possibilities are arising all the time as New Light grows and develops.

Through a series of workshops, lectures and guided viewings, New Light also plans to foster the enjoyment and appreciation of contemporary art among sections of the community who may feel excluded by standard art environments.

Here you will find work to purchase from the artists exhibiting at this year's Swinton Park Exhibition, with 50% of all sales going to New Lights.
